Different people. The same keyboard. In offices and hot-desking spaces, keyboards and mice are shared touchpoints. Choose equipment that makes regular cleaning easier, and build it into the handover between users.
A 2009 university study sampled 30 shared keyboards and five single-user keyboards. The shared keyboards had significantly higher average microbial counts. The researchers recommended regular cleaning and disinfection, especially at workstations used by multiple people.
This was a small university study, not a test of Man & Machine products or a measurement of illness in hot-desking offices.

Compatible silicone covers provide a continuous cleanable surface over the keys. Flat drapes support quick wipe-downs, while removable covers can be cleaned separately.
For hot desks, reception areas and shared offices, choose a cleanable keyboard and mouse, then make cleaning part of the handover routine alongside hand hygiene.
The advantage is cleanability. These products support a more practical hygiene routine; they do not stay clean automatically. Results depend on the model, cleaning method and how consistently it is used.

A 2019 office study found an average 85.4% reduction in a harmless tracer virus on hands and surfaces after a programme combining surface disinfection and hand hygiene.
This measured tracer contamination, not cold or flu cases. It did not test these keyboards. Two authors worked for a hygiene-products manufacturer.
Read the office study · 2019 ↗A 2015 pilot trial involving 324 office employees reported a 31% relative reduction in combined self-reported respiratory, flu-like and gastrointestinal infections with a hand-hygiene programme.
The programme used training, hand sanitiser and posters. It was not a keyboard-cleaning trial, and the reduction in days off was not statistically significant.

Yes. Follow its manufacturer’s instructions. For example, Dell advises against spraying liquid directly onto equipment or letting moisture drip into keyboards. A purpose-designed washable keyboard offers different approved cleaning options, depending on the model.
Read Dell’s equipment cleaning guidance ↗No. Cleaning removes dirt; disinfection reduces microorganisms using an appropriate product and method. A cleanable design makes that routine easier to carry out. It still needs regular cleaning and does not replace hand hygiene.
Only use a method expressly approved for that exact product. Some removable silicone drapes and accessories can be autoclaved; this does not mean the keyboard itself can be. Check the manufacturer’s product instructions before cleaning or sterilising.

Treat keyboards and mice as frequently touched surfaces. Choose a cleaning schedule for your workplace, remove visible dirt, then disinfect using a method approved for the exact product. Follow the disinfectant’s contact time and the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid abrasive materials, acetone and petroleum-based cleaners. Sterilisation is only suitable for accessories expressly approved for it.
